Woodstock, November 8, 2018 – The City of Woodstock is pleased to announce that it has taken an important step in addressing the ongoing shortage of family physicians in the Friendly City and is excited to welcome Kristy Hons as Woodstock's professional Physician Recruiter starting immediately.

Kristy Hons (formerly Dickson) was born and raised in Woodstock before moving to Hamilton to earn her Bachelors of Science in Honours Biology and Pharmacology and Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from McMaster University. She held various positions in Pharmaceutical Marketing and Government affairs while completing her MBA. After working as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative for 8.5 years in Calgary, AB., Kristy has returned to Woodstock where she now lives with her husband and two young daughters.

The need to attract more primary care practitioners was identified in the City's most recent strategic plan. In response, City Council approved funding for this new position in the 2018 budget.

"The City recognizes that access to primary care is a key determinant of health for our community and has heard from the citizens how important it is to have a local family doctor" said Mayor Trevor Birtch. "With the growth of population in Woodstock we know the need for new family physicians will be present for some time".

Since 2011, only 3 new family physicians have opened practices in Woodstock, two of whom assumed existing practices. Population growth from the last census period alone suggests there is an immediate need for 2 to 3 additional physicians, not including those Woodstonians already without a family doctor.

Moving forward, The City expects it will need to consistently recruit new family physicians in order to replace retiring physicians and to better serve the increasing population.
